In my last post I wrote about several wearable devices I used while studying in Germany. With all the chatter about wearable displays at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year I decided it’s time for a post about wearable display devices that look promising. Several of the companies making the devices have been researching and developing this technology for several years now and appear to be on the verge of creating usable devices that consumers can afford. Keep in mind there are two main purposes for these displays: media consumption and augmented reality.

According to MITs Technology Review, most of the companies working on these wearable head mounted displays started out building systems for the military. My interest in wearable devices is centered around consumer products for recreation and leisure time, however it’s fascinating to see some of these companies building innovative communication products for industries like aviation and hospitality first, in order to generate enough revenue and research to get themselves into the consumer market.

RECON INSTRUMENTS

One of my favorite applications for wearable displays is used for augmented reality while participating in snow and dirt sports like snowboarding and dirt biking. Recon Instruments makes micro optic displays that are are completely non-obtrusive for front and peripheral vision and provide real-time information on speed, jump analytics, distance, temperature and much more. Recon’s MOD Live GPS micro optic displays snap into Recon-ready goggles and connect to Android devices (iOS coming soon) via Bluetooth. They just recently partnered with with Smith Optics and Scott sports so I’m expecting we’ll start seeing more of these on the slopes quite soon.

More info: http://www.reconinstruments.com/products/mod

ZEAL OPTICS

A fellow MCDM student, Derek Walker, recently posted a video of another goggle device for snow and dirt sports that records video, takes pictures and has an in-goggle viewfinder. These won’t be available for another year, but I really like the way they’ve integrated a head mounted camera.

LUMUS OPTICAL

“Offering a new way of living, working, communicating and viewing content (including Internet, movies, TV and video games) anywhere and anytime, Lumus-enabled displays take vision to the ultimate level by redefining what you see on the go“

According to their website, Lumus is the “leading enabler of wearable displays”. Their technologies are currently being used by pilots in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. National Guard. Instead of developing displays from start to finish, Lumus sells their Optical Engine Modules under OEM agreements to leading consumer electronics manufacturers, who then market lines of products integrated with Lumus technology. By doing this they have penetrated a wide range of markets but don’t neccessily have control over how their technology is being used.

One fascinating tidbit from their site helps to explain the need for this type of product: Manufacturers and cellular service providers alike are demanding a portable personal display solution that will ensure an optimal large-screen viewing experience, thereby guaranteeing the success of their products and services. Ari Grobman, business development manager for Lumus, guesses that consumer devices will appear in “two years, maybe less.”

VUZIX

“The Company’s products, personal display devices that offer users a portable high quality viewing experience; provide solutions for mobility, thermal sighting systems, tactical wearable displays and virtual and augmented reality.”

Credit: GizmoWatch
Vuzix won two innovation awards at CES for advanced 3D glasses and a new monocular see-through head mounted display (HMD). Their new 3D Mobile Video Eyewear looks pretty slick and connects to nearly anything with HDMI or any other type of video out. They provide a big screen experience (75″ from as seen from 10 feet away) and cost about the same as a plasma TV, $599. The new monocular see-through HMD for idustrial use is intended for things like viewing the schematics of a machine while looking at it and will go on sale later in 2012 for $5,000 to $10,000.

Vuzix has been developing their display technology for military and industrial applications since 1997. In 2005 they jumped into what they call the “consumer Video Eyewear market”. The company is focused on making its video eyewear the standard mobile equipment for watching news, sports, music videos and movies, and for playing video games on the go.

SENSICS

SmartGoggles are by far the ugliest head mounted display I’ve seen but they have some cool features including a 360 degree view, 720p display, built-in Android 4.0, head & hand tracking 3D processing, Wifi and Bluetooth. They appear to offer an immersive virtual 3D environment and use 11 cell phone cameras mounted on the front to detect hand and arm gestures allowing the person to interact with what they see. So far they haven’t announced a price but they should be available later in 2012.

Sensics is also developing a see-through SmartGoggle for augmented reality applications.

SONY

According to announcement made on Jan. 5, Sony is working on a 3D head mounted display and has already released a prototype. There’s no word on when it be available but it appears to be intended for watching videos and playing video games.

KOPIN

“Golden-i is the world’s first hands-free and wireless headset computer. Golden-i will revolutionize the way we naturally interface with computers and intuitively interact with our virtually enhanced surroundings.”

The Golden-i device has been out for awhile but was on display at CES. Like Sensics SmartGoggles, the Golden-i device has a built-in processor, Bluetooth and Wifi. It runs Windows CE embedded and is controlled by gestures and voice. This device’s display sits just below your natural line of sight and appears to be 15″ when it’s in focus.

EPSON

These glasses didn’t make it on stage at CES, I just really like the picture. According to The Verge, they went on sale in Japan back in November for around $643. They simulate a screen that is 320″ wide from about 65 feet away at a resolution of 960×540 and have built-in Wifi.

One of the things I found most interesting while researching these displays is that the software needed for augmented reality is far ahead of the hardware. The companies like Recon that are actually creating new markets have integrated software and hardware while other companies like Lumus are just focused on creating the best display. At this point it’s still hard to speculate just how viable head mounted displays will become, but if they’re anything like Bluetooth audio headsets we’re in for a major transition in how we communicate and see the world around us.

Always interested in hearing your thoughts. Would you drop some cash on a head mounted display device and what features are you interested in? Have you heard of any others that looking interesting?

Adults, children, fish, and crows all share an affinity for shiny things. While fish and crows are happy with the simple gleam of a metal object, humans often have a more sophisticated palette for visual objects. My friends are often doe eyed over the latest technological gizmos. Children, once enraptured by a jingling set of keys, now become enthralled by the flashy hypnotic screens of an iPhone or tablet. Is the increase in consumption of shiny digital media by our children a problem?

There is certainly little doubt that humans are growing more visual across the board. We are exposed to more and more visual stimulations online and in digital technology. Our screen options are a lot like our shirt size: small, medium, or large. However we choose to digest this media is really up to us, but unless you’re like a Geico commercial and live under a rock, you’re exposed to some form of digital media.

No matter what we think or how we feel about our media use, screen-time for children is on the rise. According to a recent study published by Common Sense Media 27% of the children between the ages of 0 and 8 spend their screen time on a mobile device, tablet, video iPod system, handheld gaming console, computers, and televisions.

Let’s break it down:

Two-thirds (65%) of 0- to 8-year-olds watch TV at least once every day (ranging from 37% of 0-1 year- olds, to 73% of 2- to 4-year-olds and 72% of 5- to 8-year-olds).

Forty-two percent also have a TV in their bedroom, and 39% live in a home where the TV is left on all (10%) or most (29%) of the time–whether anyone is watching it or not.

Computer use is pervasive among very young children, with half (53%) of all 2- to 4-year- olds having ever used a computer, and nine out of ten (90%) 5- to 8-year-olds having done so

Half (52%) of all children now have access to one of the newer mobile devices at home: either a smartphone (41%), a video iPod (21%), or an iPad or other tablet device (8%).

In a recent publication by the American Academy of Pediatrics media use for children under the age of two is discouraged. Overuse of media has been linked to childhood obesity, poor sleep habits, and attention issues in children over the age of two. Research for children between the ages of 18 and 24 use digital media as an educational tool is still inconclusive, but parents should be weary of marketing from companies for programs to children in this age range.

There is a growing conversation and dialogue occurring right now about the balance of digital media consumption and the potential negative impacts that may befall children and the educational benefits for them. Children need to be exposed to other learning experiences that incorporate play and reading.

It’s all about balance–letting kids explore while offering them options beyond the screen. Taking them outside to experience fresh air while allowing them to map their physical world as well as their visual world. We are busy, I get that. The TV can serve as a powerful babysitter, entertainment vehicle, and educational tool. But at the end of the day (or beginning) we must be able to power down and unplug and we can be the best example for our children by limiting our own media consumption.

Let’s ensure a healthy cognitive future for our children with a balanced media diet and enlivening this conversation about getting children away from their screens even for just a short time.

Now, let’s all go outside and play.

Last week UC Berkeley researcher Kentaro Toyama wrote a guest post on James Fallows’ blog in The Atlantic entitled, “Technology is Not the Answer.” It struck a chord with many. (The day it was published multiple people in my network sent me links—always a sign of buzz.)

In this first of a series of five guest posts, Toyama suggested that we have overemphasized the role technology can play in solving some of the world’s most pressing problems, at the expense of emphasizing the intent and capacity of partners on the ground. While Toyama readily admits that technology can provide incredible “amplification” of efforts, international development success hinges on the human beings that compose the partnerships, not the shiny new toys.

Toyama’s belief that people matter more than the products they use is one I share. To start, it informed my approach for my lecture at tomorrow’s Seattle Arts & Lecture – U Series, “’Let’s Do the Numbers’: Metrics and Maturation of Digital Media in Emerging Markets.” One of the central storylines of my talk addresses the “demographic dividend” that many emerging market countries possess: namely, the significantly young populations who can drive economic growth as they enter the workforce.

However, a young population alone does not guarantee success. Certain stars must align in governance, education, and employment opportunities. Countries that are home to large youth populations and have limited infrastructure or jobs opportunities find themselves in challenging situations where they have millions of under employed and unemployed youth. Some of these youth are educated and some not—and if there are no jobs to focus their talents then unrest can occur, and often does. Again, it comes back to Toyama’s questions around the human capacity on the ground.

Furthermore, these questions relate directly to our April Four Peaks Salon with Jessica Rothenberg-Aalami. MCDM Director Hanson Hosein and I will be engaging Rothenberg-Aalami in conversations around her book (co-authored with Sailesh Chutani and Akhtar Badshah), “Technology at the Margins: How IT Meets the Needs of Emerging Markets.” As a managing partner at the Gobee Group and a trained economic geographer, Rothenberg-Aalami will illustrate the distinction between intent and impact through the rich case studies her book is built around. This conversation could not be more relevant, given current political events, the reframing of business interests in emerging markets, and careful consideration of the will and intent of people. As the Gobee Group website states, “Most technology problems are people problems in disguise.”

MCDM Faculty iconoclast Ken Rufo has been up to some interesting things lately. Always on the hunt for enlightening challenges to assumptions regarding technology and digital communications, Rufo agreed to answer some questions about a new initiative he has undertaken with the help of some MCDM students.

The initiative has the provocative (if sightly opaque) title of “The Collective for Digital Pataphysics.”

Check out this video from the Collective for Digital Pataphysics about their “Trust Protocol” project:

FTM: What is pataphysics? What specifically is “digital pataphysics?”

Ken Rufo: Pataphysics, which is often written ‘pataphysics, is a term coined by the French absurdist Alfred Jarry to describe a science of imaginary solutions. It’s obviously a play on “metaphysics,” which it was supposed to supplement. Pataphysics is a kind of absurdist, experimental way of thinking about the abstract as if it was concrete, or thinking about the exceptions that might otherwise prove a rule. It’s comic, but never merely sarcastic or mocking. The idea of digital pataphysics is really just my attempt to apply the same experimental, theatrical sensibility to ways of learning about digital and social media.

FTM: Who is Alfred Jarry?

Ken Rufo: Jarry was a Frenchman writing at the close of the 19th Century. He’s probably most known for his play Ubu Roi and the book Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll.

FTM: How did the CDP get started?

Ken Rufo: I teach an Ethics of Digital Media class here at MCDM, and the idea really came about as the result of some of our in-class discussions. There had been interest in exploring certain aspects of social media that seemed to require a less straight-forward research methodology, and the conversations convinced me that an approach like the CD’P would be both interesting for students (and others) and productive.

FTM: What kinds of projects will the CDP do?

Ken Rufo: Well the goal of the Collective is to engage in experimental theatre of a sort, kind of like a social media art installation. I’m reluctant to be too specific about the various projects, because the first two planned projects work best if they’re largely clandestine. Suffice it to say that the first one, which is codenamed “The Trust Protocol” is an exploration of the formation of trust and authority online, while the second, which will likely be codenamed “A Story of Digits”, will experiment with new story-telling potential made possible by the variety of new media platforms now available. There are some others being considered, and I think we’re all happy taking, making, and discussing new project ideas.

FTM: Why is pataphysics important to a student in the MCDM, or is it important?

Ken Rufo: Honestly, it depends on the student. These sort of inquiries might not matter to a lot of folks more interested in the business analytics side of things. But for those interested in exploring new possibilities for interactive story-telling, for those interested in larger protocols that govern online behavior, and those who worry that there is far too much speculative positivity bounding around the twitter streams, activity streams, and RSS aggregators, and that this positivity is not sustainable, the sort of work we want to play at should be right up their alley. And best of all, assuming all goes well, it should be a load of fun. In addition, these projects work because they’re distributed over time and space, so it’s not a huge time commitment, just a creative one.

As for spectating, rather than participating, some of the projects will be more useful than others. Here at the MCDM we work very hard to translate skills and knowledge into expertise. But it can be difficult sometimes to separate expertise from sophistry, and hopefully that’s something we’ll be able to parse more fully as a result of our Trust Protocol project. We’ll see how it goes.

FTM: How does the CDP relate to other work you do?

Ken Rufo: It relates to my teaching and research on the use of social media. Look, pataphysics has a somewhat frivolous reputation, which is unfortunate. But I see the CD’P as a way of conducting research on digital media without certain methodological constraints. I imagine there are a whole host of people who would find that beneficial and relevant to what they do.

In 2007 I moved to Seattle, WA and found a tech savvy community in the Pacific Northwest. I found myself in the office of the Director of the MCDM Hanson Hosein and we began talking about the program, my background in journalism, and a documentary I was producing on my great uncle, the late musician Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter.
After the meeting I was convinced and ready to sign up! The only thing I didn’t ask him was what sort of jobs most graduates seek once they are “finished” with the program. At this time in 2008 there was only one person who seemed to get a decent job by using digital media and social media marketing and that was President Barack Obama who Hosein titled as being the “first digital President” in an earlier post.

Every class I took in the MCDM program helped me to prepare for my next unforeseen big move to South Africa. Our move was swift and took place during both the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. When I arrived here in Johannesburg I found digital media everywhere and moving at a rapid pace. One thing that I have witnessed is how SMS messaging is everywhere and even playing a role in civic engagement. The second week we were in the country we drove over a pothole and not long afterward the car began to slow down. The deceivingly rain-filled pothole had caused a flat tire and I had to change the tire. Days later I read in the local newspaper The Star (yes print media is still relevant) that a new initiative called LEAD SA started by local radio stations and print media to help develop pride in South African sports teams and encourage “good Samaritan” efforts has now fixed over 4,000 potholes across the Johannesburg area. This is how it works here in South Africa:

Road users can call a direct phone number to report a pothole or

Take a photo of the pothole and SMS the picture and location and/or

Log onto to www.potholebrigade.co.za and send the photo and location

Each report will be issued a reference number and a inspector will go to the site to determine if the brigade can fix it then a team will be dispatched immediately. It takes only 20 minutes to fix each hole.

The “Pothole Brigade” uses a Jetpatcher, which is a pothole fixing machine from New Zealand brought to South Africa by Dial Direct and the Johannesburg Roads Agency. The team pothole fixers work from 6am to 11pm, Monday to Friday. The response from the public has been so good that that the brigade will be tripling its workers and purchasing two more Jetpatchers. The methods used by Jetpatcher are said to be three times faster than conventional methods used by the government. With innovative citizen engagement we can expect to see more projects like this involving political voting, mobile banking, crime alerts and on site reporting as in Egypt and Tunisia.

MCDM helped me become well rounded in multimedia production and analyzing its next course. I learned Podcasting from Kathy Gill, Social Production from Drew Keller, Mobile Technology from Kelly McIvor and what was happening in Emerging Markets in digital media with Anita Verna Crofts. When I arrived here in Johannesburg I found digital media everywhere and moving at a rapid pace. The first thing I had to do was unlock my Samsung Galaxy S from T-Mobile so that I could use a Vodacom SIM card and make local calls. While visiting VodaWorld, a gigantic “mobile phone mall”, I saw the latest Nokia devices which isn’t surprising since they have a huge presence in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. I even caught a recent Foreign Policy article which called the Nokia 1100 the “AK-47 of mobile phones” becoming the entry device for developing nation subscribers. Africa has over 300 million mobile phone subscribers passing the United States yet far behind China’s 700 million users.

Here in South Africa there are five million Internet users finally breaking through the the 10% penetration mark and I use a USB 3G modem that I have to top up by the Megabyte. In dollars that adds up to $27.00 for 600 MB or $41.00 for 1.2 GB. I can tell you that one MCDM four hour class minus downloading would easily take up close to 600 MB so cherish your free wi-fi cafes in Seattle. I’ve also noticed in South Africa that the Samsung tablet was here before the Apple iPad which was just released in this country late January 2011 for the first time. Android has been releasing its application market aggressively on multiple carriers and the same is happening here in Africa. The price for the iPad 16BG is R4,499 ($642.71) which is actually “cheaper” than the Galaxy tablet R7,899 ($1,128) pre-paid. These are just some of the observations I have witnessed since living in South Africa so far and I will continue to report regularly to Flip The Media with many more. My allegiance to MCDM proves that even though I graduated in 2010 I have not “finished” my studies so don’t be surprised if you see me in the back of the classroom one day.

The sixth annual iConference takes place in Seattle from February 8-11, 2011 and is hosted by the University of Washington Information School. This conference will bring together faculty and students from 28 academic institutions as well as researchers and practitioners from a diverse array of fields, including library science, health, information management, law, government and data security.

A feature in this year’s conference is a panel on “Information, Values and the Justice System”. The workshop, which takes place on Tuesday the 8th, is organized by members of the Technology Committee of the Access to Justice Board, of which I am the current committee Chair. The panel will examine the role that technology plays in assisting access to the resources of the Washington State court system. Technology and access are key components in how citizens can make effective use of government services. The policy implications of how government agencies can provide technological access to services across geographical, cultural, social and economic areas are immense.

One of the local resources looking at these questions is the Washington State Access to Justice Board. The board is an advisory and advocacy body created by the Washington State Supreme Court to monitor and ensure that the justice system operates without bias or barriers for everyone, especially those living in poverty or who are otherwise prevented from achieving equal justice under the law.

The Technology Committee plays an important role in delivering the Board’s mission given the emergence of technology in the legal field and the relative technical inexperience of many legal practitioners. The committee has a unique mandate in that it looks at the issue of access through technology from both the legal provider’s point of view and the legal consumer’s point of view.

Fairness in the application of the legal process often hinges on access to information – learning about one’s rights, locating legal help and accessing court records are some examples. Historically, those of greater means and abilities have had more access to the information they needed when seeking help from the legal system. Though not a panacea, the transformation of the justice system through technology may be key to breaking down the historical barriers of geography, education and affluence.

A key challenge to lawyers, judges and policy makers is the nurturing of guiding principles to ensure that technology increases, rather than decreases accessibility. New and shifting paradigms confront both the practitioners and consumers of the justice system. Because all of us depend on a functional and accessible legal system, the exploration of information theory is crucial.

When looking at the legal system, justice, technology and information theory we need to look at our core values. Specifically, we need to ask he question: What do we mean by “equal justice?” Secondly, we need to examine how we imbue that meaning into the choices we make in applying information technology to the justice system as a whole.

Addressing such questions is the work of a sustained interdisciplinary effort – a collaboration among experts in both the legal and information fields. This will be a core theme in this year’s conference.

The iConference takes place in Downtown Seattle at the Renaissance Hotel From February 8th until February 11th.

iConference Schedule: http://www.ischools.org/iConference11/program/
IConference home: http://www.ischools.org/iConference11/2011index/

Mike Katell is the Director of Technology at Columbia Legal Services and the Chair of the Technology Committee of the Washington State Access to Justice Board. His work is focused on making technology a thoughtful, effective tool in the service of providing legal aid for people living in poverty.

Qwiki provides rich media to consumers by scrubbing the web for content and assembling it into a short presentation with narration. Users can suggest content, but unlike Wikipedia, users can not actually edit the presentations.

Qwiki was first demoed last September at TechCrunch Disrupt where it was selected as the top disruptive technology (keynote). Recently, several large news outlets including ABC’s Good Morning America discussed whether or not Qwiki will be able to “flip” Google. With a new round funding and several internet moguls at their side including a co-founder of Facebook, Eduardo Saverin and Jawed Karim, a co-founder of YouTube, it appears there’s nothing stopping them.

On Friday, MediaPost reported that later this year Qwiki will provide a service that allows people to merge their Facebook and LinkedIn data, along with other online content, into a nice little “Qwiki”.

I was a bit skeptical about Qwiki’s ability to auto-magically tell my story but after watching Robert Scoble’s Qwiki, I think this could be a possibility.

What are your thoughts?
Will you tell your story with a Qwiki?
Will you tell your client’s stories with a Qwiki?

Like blogging, vlogging (video blogging) is a way to share your insights on a subject with an online audience. However, vlogging goes beyond the text of a blog post, transforming your content into an audio-visual broadcast. If you’re interested in vlogging, but don’t know how to start, here are some tips:

The first thing you’ll need is the right equipment, and the good news is you don’t need much, just a camcorder or a web camera and a good microphone. Also, for a vlog that has a more polished look, you’ll want to learn how to use video-editing software. This will enable you to add music, subtitles, etc. to your vlog. There are numerous online programs like Wax or Zwei-Stein Video Editor that you can download for free. Also, Apple iMovie and Windows Movie Maker are both easy to use and come pre-installed on Macs and PCs.

Once you’ve assembled your equipment, I recommend experimenting. Test the sound quality of your microphone; make sure there is sufficient lighting where you’re recording your vlog and figure out how you want to look on camera. Remember that vlogging is a form of communication, so you want to not only be visible (no low lighting), but also intelligible. Most vlog “episodes” should be one to three minutes, keeping the amount of bandwidth needed to host them to a minimum. Therefore it’s a good idea to rehearse your content. At the very least, I recommend preparing a script or some type of plan before each video so that you can deliver concise, focused content. Finally, don’t be afraid to have fun with your vlog. Depending on your audience, you’ll want to be more than just informative; you’ll also want to be candid and entertaining. Like blogging, it’s important to pick subjects you love and can explore in a series of posts. One episode doth not a vlog make.

After you shoot and edit your vlog, it’s time to post it online. Most vloggers post on video-sharing sites such as YouTube or Vimeo. However, WordPress is also a great place to privately host your vlog, and many WordPress themes have been created especially for vloggers who want to express their unique personality or professional expertise. Regardless of where you post, make sure to tag your videos and make them fully accessible to your audience. Title each entry and write useful, searchable descriptions that are more than just a five-word blurb. Finally, before publishing your vlog to the Web, test it one last time to make sure it’s working the way you want it to; your audience will thank you.

Remember that you’re vlogging in a community environment. This means it’s not only important to respond to constructive commentary on your own blog, but you should also seek out and interact with other vloggers. Once you start commenting on other videos, you’ll discover that this interaction can inspire new videos of your own or lead to collaborations between vloggers that generate positive publicity for both parties.

To further encourage your endeavors, here are three of my favorite vloggers (some language NSFW). Who are yours?

Natalie Tran (aka communitychannel) is one of YouTube’s most popular vloggers, known primarily for her self-deprecating and observational humor.

The Nostalgia Critic offers hilarious commentary on the entertainment of a not-so-distant past. For those who grew up during the 80s or 90s, prepare to have your childhood favorites skewered.

Starving Designer is a vlog community on Vimeo. Styled as a “semi-reality” show about the creative process, this is storytelling that will amaze and inspire.
