Flip the Media
At the crossroads of Media, Culture and Technology

Transmedia Storytelling and Net Neutrality were the topics of the night last Tuesday at the MDCM’s first ever Four Peaks public salon. The salon started with a live broadcast of MediaSpaceTV featuring an interview between MCDM director Hanson Hosein and Brent Friedman, CEO of Electric Farm Entertainment. I can’t offer much commentary yet, but I thought this was an interesting story of old technology meets new.  After the death of his grandparents, filmmaker Morgan Dews found audiotapes and dictaphone recordings they made chronicling their unusual lives and marriage. He made a 75-minute documentary and is distributing the film theatrically in New York and Los Angeles, and over the internet as well, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday morning.

The article contains some great commentary by the director on filmmaking in the digital age, including his belief that an online releasing strategy is the only one left to truly independent filmmakers in the 21st century. I think there’s a great deal of truth there, but I think it is also only a matter of time before we see all films released theatrically and online simultaneously.

The Multimedia Storytelling class Part II will be working more on how to compile these videos together, but for now, I thought you might like to see the order they were meant to be in. We envisioned a series of stories that would explore the changing media landscape, beginning with traditional media, transitioning to citizen journalism and even experimenting with our own user-generated content. The videos were all filmed using inexpensive Flip cameras.

So the boys are on their way to New Orleans and they took the Flips! (Kirk can’t live without it). I sure hope they took lots of batteries with them, given they are driving 3,000 miles just to get to New Orleans (they cannot stop at Costco to buy in bulk).
