Transmedia Storytelling and Net Neutrality were the topics of the night last Tuesday at the MDCM’s first ever Four Peaks public salon. The salon started with a live broadcast of MediaSpaceTV featuring an interview between MCDM director Hanson Hosein and Brent Friedman, CEO of Electric Farm Entertainment. Transmedia Storytelling, an interactive and multi-platform storytelling method, is according to Friedman, a way of exploring “additional tributaries,” and selecting tools from a “digital sandbox.”

Using four iPhone apps, CameraBag ($1.99) Melodica ($0.99) Brushes ($4.99) and Banner ($0.99), Richard Koci Hernandez produced a 3:25 “movie” that uses 54 photos to document 54 days of riding Bus 54 in Oakland, CA. Content produced entirely on the iPhone. I’m unclear on how he turned the content into the video. (I’ve asked.)
Hernandez is an Emmy award-winning video and multimedia producer; for 15 years, he worked as a photographer at the San Jose Mercury News. Also viewable as Facebook VIdeo.

Facebook. Twitter. Mybarackobama.com. Text messaging. The president-elect used all of these digital tools to devastating effect in the 2008 election. How did he do it? What strategic lessons can we learn from Barack Obama’s high-tech campaign? How might he deploy this online army of millions to govern? My students know that I have a weakness for Nokia technology. And of all of hometown favorite Microsoft’s innovations, I like its Silverlight application the most.
So I’m thrilled to see the two come together today, with this announcement that Nokia handsets will now carry the multimedia platform (which competes directly with Flash).
While I’m stacking links, here’s that Wikipedia link to the concept of “Participatory Video” that I mentioned in class last week. It seems to really fit with what we’re doing in this class of ours:
…a set of techniques to involve a group or community in shaping and creating their own film. The idea behind this is that making a video is easy and accessible, and is a great way of bringing people together to explore issues, voice concerns or simply to be creative and tell stories.
Finally, here’s the link to the blog coverage of that Magazine Publishers Association Digital Media Conference we discussed in class (“video, video everywhere!”), along with more information about my former MSNBC colleague, Gary Seidman, who is now making a living from producing online slideshows.
