Flip the Media
At the crossroads of Media, Culture and Technology

Today the digital media revolution has become so pervasive, powerful and omnipresent that practically every aspect of our lives is implicated.

Flip the Media is seeking posts that analyze this emerging industry and the explore the people in it. We’re also looking for the digital media angle on all the stories that define the dynamic and media saturated city we live in.

Send story pitches or completed posts to: flipmcdm@uw.edu

In addition to your pitch, make sure to include your name, contact info, your relationship to the MCDM program (if any), reasons the story is/will be timely, and your ideas for photographs or multimedia to accompany the story. We also welcome samples of your previous written work.

What does the editorial process look like?

Once you’ve submitted your idea, we’ll let you know with in the week whether your pitch/story has been accepted (please mark any timely or breaking news posts urgent!).

If so, you’ll be assigned an editor who will contact you to talk the story through, discuss angles, art and/or multimedia components where appropriate, and confirm deadlines and length.  That editor will be your point person throughout the process of reporting, producing and publishing your work.

What are we looking for?

  • Blog entries should be 500-1000 words long.
  • Paragraphs should be short and to the point.
  • Posts should have an engaging lead—perhaps a newsy hook—to draw in readers
  • Posts should be written for a general audience interested in digital media.
  • Posts should contain relevant hyperlinks and media, where appropriate.
  • Titles should be catchy and descriptive, allowing readers to quickly grasp what the topic is about.
  • A great post has original content, or offers original analysis of an issue based on the writer’s knowledge and experience. It provides more value than re-re-reporting news found elsewhere on the Web.
  • A great post is narrowly focused. It takes a sliver of a topic and makes about three or four insightful points.
  • All posts should have a ‘key digital takeaway’: we’re not just looking for the news that something happened in the world of digital media, we want to tell our readers why it matters.

If you are interested in writing for Flip the Media but would like to work with a subject matter expert, we’ve created a small database of SMEs that we’re affiliated with.

Please use this form if you are interested in adding yourself to the database.

MCDM students who’d like to get more involved should join the independent study and be a part of defining Flip the Media from the inside out. Find out more here
