The question of curate vs. create, is an interesting one to ponder. I like your definition, i.e. "curation is an act of creation." I would go further and add that it works both ways; creation is also an act of curation. The two are intermingled concepts, don't think you can have one without the other. In my mind, even the simplest creation is a presentation of a collection of thoughts and ideas even if only subliminally... Unless, of course we want to define curation as collective presentation of actual and apparent discrete, separate works.

I agree that curation is very much a creative act--and not all that different from what serious journalists are supposed to be doing: provide the context and analysis that give readers insight into the meaning of whatever was deemed newsworthy.

This type of "value add" work isn't just limited to the framework of one individual piece of writing, but also encompasses critically reviewing the various angles that need to be considered and discussed in the overall coverage of the topic and ensuring that the serious analysis/coverage gets more emphasis than the type of article that's perfect linkbait but doesn't provide any real value to the reader. That's, of course, if you care more about being a credible and valuable source than about increasing click-through rates and driving impressions, as important as that may be for generating revenues.
