The U.S. military in Afghanistan is launching a Facebook page, a YouTube site and feeds on Twitter as part of a new communications effort to reach readers who get their information on the Internet rather than in newspapers.

Officials described this a way to counter Taliban propaganda, represents a sea change in how the military can communicate its message. The army posts the news on Twitter hours before announcing it in a more formal press statement.

Not only is the Army using social networking, they are doing a pretty good job telling the stories of the people who serve in the Army–by way of their online newspaper http://www.army.mil. (http://www.army.mil/.) Their above the fold story (June 10, 3:30pm): “Operation ‘Good Heart’ gives Iraqi girl a second chance at life” written by Staff Sgt. Carl Hudson. One regular section of this well-written online newspaper is “Faces of Strength,” true stories about people who did good while in military service. There is also a linked microsite that lets readers nominate their own person of strength. There is also a YouTube link for sharing these stories with the world–along with beautiful photography, great video clips. This is true social media. Whether or not a person is a fan of the military, this site sells. Talk about ‘hearts and minds.’
