Google on TV

Not that most people are unaware of Google and its products, but as this Advertising Age article shows, the company has decided to use an old media – television- to promote Google Chrome. Its small market share (currently 1.42% vs. Internet Explorer 66.1%) may be one of the reasons why Google Chrome is going to be shown on TV. The article mentions Dish Network and NBC Universal cable networks as the television venues, and this is the ad that will be shown.

Even though companies usually consider television promotion to be a major investment, Google’s spokesman considered it a “small experiment”.  In my opinion, it seems that Google is running several video experiments to improve its market share numbers with Google Chrome.  Another of Google’s video ad experiments can be seen on Zooppa’s website. Google is running an ad competition (including videos) for Google Chrome on the Italian site, open to all in the Italian speaking community.  The public brief for the competition asserts that Google goals include “increase awareness of Google Chrome and communicate the benefits of using Google Chrome.”

This is interesting to know that Google is even creating a web browser! I shouldn’t be surprised but reading how they are using both old media and new media ways to advertise Google Chrome proves they are here to stay.
How are they promoting their social network orkut?

  2. It seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before Google Chrome gets their word out. Just look at how Gmail started and how much they have evolved into. Thanks for this, it is interesting to see that Google has decided to experiment with television promotions.

  3. I like the ad. I also like Chrome, ha. Maybe Google could try to integrate Gmail and Chrome. Get users from Gmail.

  4. Maybe the low sharing rate is truly the reason why Google put their ad on traditional mass media because it seems like if Google put their ad on the Internet, then the majority of the audience will see Google Chrome’s ad in IE or Firefox. It sounds a little bit weird to me to do this.

It’s great to see that Google is running the video experiments on Zoopa. This implies that big brands can benefit from social production by the power of word of mouths just like the small business can save advertising money from it.
