A excellent and thought post. Me and you have had this discussion before and it seems to be ever growing as more information is passed in our daily and busy lives. I love the book you put me called The Laws of Simplicity---Great read for anyone struggling with this phenomenon. I always take the late Bruce Lee advice on this topic "Absorb what is useful and discard what is useless"

Each person using social media sooner or later faces this problem. The trick here is to make a clear distinction between personal and non-personal information. The most important thing to remember is that your personal brand at some point could hurt your professional one.

I personally try to use FB for connecting with my friends and avoid using it for any business purpose. The reason is simple: if there is any chance of information you don't want to become public to leak, FB is definitely the place it is most likely to happen at.

I use LinkedIn and Biznik to build my professional brand and have two separate twitter accounts :)

I've been struggling with the same questions. At first, my take on what I say on certain social media sites was simple: "know your audience." I focused on social media/technology/MCDM issues on Twitter and my blog; Facebook was for my "real friends" back home.

That mantra doesn't work anymore, however, as the audiences on each site are becoming more diverse.

glad you brought this up, as I often contemplate about the negotiations between personal/school/professional arenas in regards to internet identity. personally, I find fbook to be the most complicated in terms of the privacy settings and co-mingling of good friends vs basic acquaintances.
