Announcing the MCDM Wiki

One of the nice things about Wikis and other social media platforms is that lots of times they can be launched within minutes of someone saying “We need a wiki.”

I seeded it with some suggested topics to try to get things going, but didn’t add any real content. Consider this your Wiki and jump in to add anything you think would be useful to your fellow MCDM students or anyone else who comes to the site. Depending on how successful it is, the hosting and URL may change in the future.

Just noticed Jeff actually suggested the Wiki before Jay did, so giving him some credit here.

Sweet! I look for this to be a terrific place to capture and share in tandem with the FTM blog.

  3. Yes, we need a wiki. But for what? That’s the question.

Absolutely that’s the question. The other two Wikis I’ve been involved in launching took off from the start because in both cases there was an enormous pent-up backlog of information that needed a better home. It’s very different to launch one because of anticipated need, and the end of the quarter is hardly the optimal time for finding uses.

The only activity so far on this one has been Jeff signing up for an account. Maybe it’s time for me to put a resized MCDM logo up…

Wiki update 1: I reinstalled it using the more complex installation process, which means more administrative ability. I figured this was worth it so the data won’t be forever tied to my hosting account and will be easier to export to another host someday. This means all of you who created accounts (which would be Jeff) need to do it again. Sorry.

Wiki update 2: I posted a How To on using Yammer: http://mcdmwiki.mootkat.com/index.php?title=How_to_Use_Yammer_With_Your_UW_Email

    Woo hoo! Content!

    Wiki update 2.

I’ve added a WYSIWYG editor so people don’t have to do Wikitext. It’s not the same one that is used on Wikipedia — instead I chose FCKeditor, which is a more MS Word-like toolbar, and which is being used by so many content management systems that’s it’s almost becoming a standard.

I also contributed a topic on how to contribute topics, including an explanation of why the process seems backwards on Wikis and how that contributes to their noted successes as crowdsourced information.

  7. Well, there hasn’t been an update to the Wiki since December 8, nothing substantive was ever added, and a lot of the point of the Wiki has been superseded by the MediaSpace site, which benefits from official MCDM sponsorship. Unless someone objects, I’ll be taking it down sometime in the near future.

This was an interesting experience for me. I very successfully introduced a Wiki at REI, where it filled a huge need that the outmoded and locked-down Intranet was not filling. While on the surface, it seems that MCDM also has a similar need and people initially expressed interest in the Wiki, there seems to have been a disconnect somewhere between need, learning curve, and possibly attention span. I’m trying out a Wiki on a side project I’m working on, where I hope it will serve dual needs of both supporting and marketing the project.

The nice thing about the Internet is how with minimal effort you can try all kinds of stuff. If it doesn’t stick, it’s not a big deal.
