How do you determine your star ranking on MCDM?
I looked into several sites; Slashdot and Apache for their contribution rules and resulting rank and reputation process. I then considered potential application to MCDM site.
SlashDot Moderation. I like the idea of Slash Dot’s moderator process for filtering out the “wisdom” of their crowds. However, their M2 status seems a little too biased to early adopters. The restriction of not being both moderator and poster would keep cartels from happening. I don’t care for the punishment rank of zero/terrible if you chose not to participate. I think this could be detrimental to encouraging new comers. Punishing at the beginning of contribution can drive participants away. Be interesting to see what percentage voyeurs they have.
Apache Meritocracy. That one may rise in rank due to merit of contributions would be an organization I would love to participate in. Since gain is shared by all, that too would feed reason to interact (in addition to the thrill of problem solving together). Their process seems a little complicated and I wonder what percentage of their group remain from their beginnings, thus having existed through the process evolution. Newer users might be turned off by attempting to understand their process. I have the same question for the Slash Dot crowd. I like that their passive users are called lurkers :->
Bulletin: Technorati ranks according to the numbers and the frequency. State of the Blogosphere 2008.
Either of the first two formats works well with the technical crowd, but would any of the above work for a blog like MCDM? I am not sure ranking by contribution numbers would be useful, as we could all just go click crazy. So then giving moderator ranks could add a filtration level and possibly raise the standard of contributions but then one would have to probably decide as a group what the purpose or standards of the blog were to be. The meritocracy of Apache is definable because they are working towards workable solutions. If the solutions never work, there would be low merit. MCDM subject area is less specific. Something to continue to think about.
