Today’s TrendCentral Technology Articles announce PMc, the first magazine designed exclusively for the iPhone.  This is another sign of the digital movement of today’s media. It is surprising to me that such a product has not been created until now. I am curious to hear if this is a product that current iPhone owners see themselves using. TrendCentral writes:

PMc: Noted photographer Patrick McMullan is taking on a new media: the iPhone. The first magazine created to be read exclusively on the iPhone, PMc intends to cover subject material in the realm of luxury, entertainment, and fashion. A single page of PMc will have about one hundred and fifty words of text from a variety of guest writers, including many notable authors. The bi-monthly digital rag will be available for download at Apple’s Application Store, and we expect it to be followed by a flurry of imitators looking to leverage the newest of new media.

Unless the content is all iPhone-specific, this doesn’t make sense. Even then it’s only really logical if there are special features embedded in the content that only work within the iPhone environment.

The overwhelming trend in social media is towards platform-agnostic syndication and interoperability. An RSS feed works because it doesn’t care how it’s read — you can subscribe with all kinds of different applications, either locally-hosted or on the Web. Twitter publishes their API because it’s in their interest for other services, like Twemes, to spring up using their data in ways Twitter doesn’t. It’s not hard to come up with more examples.

I guess I don’t share the fears some have about the Internet becoming locked into proprietary software. Software companies that peg their strategy on information monopoly will find consumer making an end run around them, just as they did with with music.

  2. I think it has more to do with branding, anything that associate itself with iphone gets noticed, smart marketing.

The description is of the magazine being released as an iPhone application. The content is inextricably tied to a single hardware/operating system platform, unless there are other editions that don’t get mentioned.
