Bye tweme, here comes GroupTweet!

Why isn’t twitter used by everybody? I think one of the reasons is that it doesn’t do group very well.

Sure there are many twitter fanatics who use it enthusiastically and innovatively. But we all reach a point that we want to twitter in groups. “Group” is the essence of social media. Twitter needs group features to truly differentiate from SMS. That’s how we had tags, hashtags, none worked that well. Tweme is down, again. Surely we need something better!

Enter GroupTweet. Check its web site to see how it works. It simply uses a twitter account created for the group, which follows the members. The real feature is member can broadcast to the group, by sending a direct tweet to the group.

Why not give it a try? I created a group called “MCDM_fun”, for us to do things like sports or anything fun. Here is what you need to do to join:

  1. Search and follow “MCDM_fun” on twitter
  2. When you want to broadcast something to the group, send a DIRECT message to “MCDM_fun” (type in “D MCDM_fun blah blah”)

Let’s have some fun!

I agree with you, but I guess grouping could be more powerful when it encourages people to express their opinions regarding to some serious issues, such as politics and academics. As a consequence, different thoughts meet and hit, more thoughtful and constructive, as well as critical ideas might be generated, which might eventually lead to the possibility of “mass collaboration”. Of course, it is also possible that people might “fight” when each other’s opinion contradicts. So, I suppose it is also necessary to draw some bottom lines here – limits on abusive languages.

Fun is my middle name (actually it’s McFun) but you know what’s not fun? Posting this stuff to all the different possible outlets – Facebook, MySpace, Twitter – is too much. Is there one stop posting?

  3. Thanks for this post! we shall try it!

Agree with Ross, which is why I’m a big fan of synch tools! On Facebook there is an application that syncs your tweets with Facebook, so you only have to post in one place. I also use Tweeter RSS feeds on my blog so I aggregate all in one place.

But we are in the world of distributed network so we need to get used to parceling out our messages and build a presence where people are forming communities spontaneously. So Ross is actually bringing up a key challenge of social media strategy. My read is that the challenges and questions you come up with individually in using social media, are the same that big institutions are facing too. So take the opportunity to play with these tools and use it as a learning opportunity.

PS. I’m experimenting with http://search.twitter.com to find terms (no need to use a # with a term).

Yeah! After having a horrible experience with tweme, I have some hope. A little hope, I would say, because I also sent an e-mail to Twitter folks about my “filtering condition” a week ago and I didn’t hear back from them yet.

  5. Hm. I can’t seem to access Grouptweet.com.
