Well, as we discussed in class last week, social media’s immediate relevance to our mainstream institutions is indeed the threat it poses.

Yes Adriana, there is a Comcast Twitter Claus, scouring the blogosphere looking for potential PR disasters in-the-making. See today’s Seattle Times article on this very subject.

Amazingly, in this same issue (and section) of dead tree media to which I continue to subscribe, there are two other stories on social media:

Social Networkers Beware: applications pose risks.

ZoeCity is social network for Christians

One part of the Times article about Comcast bothered me. This Quote from Biz Stone:

“If Comcast can get to those influencers, the complaints will not grow to a full blog post.”

If Comcast is using social media to gather information about how to improve their service then I’m all for it. If they are instead using Twitter and others to suppress the conversation when it turns critical, well then, isn’t that censorship?

Obviously the quote isn’t from an official Comcast spokesperson, but its still struck me as a little Orwellian.
