Flip crashing your computer?
So not all is heavenly with our little camera. The new Flip (black version) seems to have some major problems crashing computers (especially macs). I overheard someone in class complaint about this, and I have crashed my laptop 6 times. I have also crashed the G5s in the lab 5 times trying to install the firmware. I gave up and am downloading it from the site:
I don’t know if this will help, but Flip has an update for the native firmware that comes in the camera. I’ll download it anyway since it’s strongly recommended by the Flip people:

I’ve installed the software off the camera on my laptop and PC, downloaded the December update on both machines right away, and haven’t had any problems. No crashes, file issues, etc. In fact, the only problem I’ve had is in trying to figure out how to convert my .avi and .wmv files to a format I can upload to the UW iTunes site (not a Flip issue).
It’s interesting that we’re having such a variety of experiences and bummer that you’re having so many problems. It would be great if we could get to the bottom of the issue and relay the info back to Flip.

Hi Carie,
What software are you using to edit it your footage? See Doug’s post on the list of things we tried (we finally got it to work).
I think my conclusion is that the codec of the Flip is not meant for advanced editing softwares and we should have stuck to using iMovie or the native editing software of the Flip. The bad thing is that is quite limited particularly when you have so much Broll and audio combos to do. However, I would like to know what are the other teams experiencing with the editing process.

I am also having issues with the Flip crashing my Mac G5 Quad. No problems on the Mac G4 laptop…both running system 10.4.10. I’m going to download the firmware now and will see what happens. Thanks for giving me some direction Adri!

Updating Firmware helped! I am able to access the DCIM folder on the Flip drive now and copy them to my computer. I do not use the Flip app at all. Then take the AVIs into QuickTime and export as needed then import into Final Cut Pro. A little bit of work around, but it works and I can add overlays, etc. to my video.
If I don’t need the added editing capabilities I import the AVIs directly into iMovie and export for web purposes.
Thanks again!

Great to hear! Another workflow that worked for us (if you don’t want to fuss around with conversions) is to import the native AVI files clips into iMovie HD, put them in the timeline, and then, open the iMovie file in Final Cut Pro.
